The FIM Flat Track World Championship dates back to 2011, but it was a single race title, that held little prestige, up to an including 2017. In 2018 it became a three-round title, with two rounds held in Italy. More recently it has gained more respect with US star Slammin' Sammy Halbert competing in the 2023 championship.
Halbert [#69, pictured above] suffered at the hands of the referees, with his 'take no prisoners' riding style seeing him penalised at times throughout the 2023 campaign. The American is not a slow learner, and he leads the classification, heading into this weekend's UK round, the third race of the six-race 2024 series, that takes place at King's Lynn Speedway. Halbert has also secured the famous 'content' sharing platform, Only Fans on as a sponsor for 2024.
23 riders are entered from 11 different nations. Reigning 2023 FIM #1, Czech rider, Ervin Krajcoviv, is in third, with 2020/2021 champ Lasse Kurvinen currently in second. British interest is supplied by British Supersport star, UK flat track stalwart, and Sideburn 10 cover star, Tim Neave; newly crowned 2024 DTRA Pro champ Jack Bell, and wild card rider and multiple-time DTRA champ, Gary Birtwistle. Another familiar name is Gerard Bailo (#17 below). The Spanish rider is raced the very trick Zaeta.
The race format is 12 qualifying heats, a last-chance qualifier and a grand final that will be contested by the eight top riders on the night.
The first race is scheduled to start at 19.00 under the King’s Lynn floodlights, although the gates will open at 15.30 – just before practice starts at 16.00.
Pay on the gate. Admission prices are £20 for adults, £5 for children (11-15 years-old). Under 11s are free if accompanied by a paying adult.
